Neomitranthes obscura is an evergreen shrub or small tree with an irregular crown, reaching up to 6 meters in height. The trunk is grooved and can measure between 15–25 cm in diameter. In its native range, it is occasionally harvested from the wild for its edible fruit and for wood.
The species produces small red to nearly black fruits up to 16 mm in diameter. Inside is a succulent, yellow pulp with a sweet flavor, typically surrounding 2–5 seeds. The fruits are attractive when ripe and stand out nicely against the foliage.
It is native to the Atlantic and coastal rainforests of Brazil, where it prefers low-lying sandy soils with a high water table.
Seeds are sold in packs of one. They are shipped in humid vermiculite.
