Manilkara huberi - silver leaf massaranduba

$15.00

Manilkara huberi is a large, evergreen tree native to the dryland forests of the Amazon region. It grows very tall, often reaching 30–50 meters, with a small crown and a straight bole. Its simple, leathery (coriaceous) leaves are clustered at the branch tips and show a distinctive two-tone coloration—glabrous on the upper surface and finely hairy below.

The tree produces axillary inflorescences with whitish, androgynous flowers that can appear during more than one season per year. The fruits are globose, smooth, and violaceous-black when ripe, with juicy, sweet, aromatic pulp that is highly flavorful. Each fruit contains 1–4 seeds and ripens from October to February.

Though not commonly cultivated, the fruits are locally appreciated and consumed fresh. Due to the tree’s height, fruits are typically collected from the ground and are frequently sold in local markets of the Lower Amazon. The species is propagated mainly by seed.

Seeds are from a cultivated tree and are shipped in packs of one, in humid vermiculite.
