Eugenia sp. Bakuri
Eugenia sp. "Bakuri" is a newly discovered species found in the mountainous regions of Rio de Janeiro, near the border with Minas Gerais, within the riparian forests of the Rio Paraíba do Sul. It grows at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters, suggesting it may have some tolerance to light frost. This species produces unusually large fruits for a Eugenia, measuring around 4–5 cm in diameter. The fruits feature a tough yellow to orange rind and white pulp, with a striking resemblance to the well-known Bakuri fruit (Platonia insignis). The calyx is notable for its sepals, which are turned inward toward the center. While specific flavor details are still unknown, the fruit is expected to have a mildly sweet and slightly astringent taste, similar to other Eugenia species. Eugenia sp. "Bakuri" prefers a subtropical to mild tropical climate and is potentially suitable for USDA hardiness zones 9b–11, particularly in areas with mild winters and good drainage.
