Eugenia sp. Fábio
Eugenia sp. Fábio is an unidentified and very rare Eugenia cultivated in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and named after Fábio Longen, from whose collection it originates. This species occurs at elevations close to 1,000 meters, in a region known for wide temperature variation, ranging from approximately 26°F to 100°F, suggesting good tolerance to mild frosts and cooler conditions compared to many lowland Eugenia. The plant has a compact growth habit, typically reaching 1–4 meters in height, making it suitable for small gardens and container cultivation.
The tree produces small, purple berries with a sweet flavor accompanied by noticeable astringency. Those who have tasted the fruit consistently report a strong resemblance to Syzygium cumini (jambolão), both in flavor profile and the deep, tintorial quality of the pulp. Due to its rarity, adaptability to cooler climates, and unique fruit character, Eugenia sp. Fábio is a highly desirable collector’s plant with both ornamental and experimental fruit-growing value.
Seeds are sold in packs of one. They are shipped in humid vermiculite.
